About the Story

In the ashes of a world consumed by the dead, survival means sacrifice.
For Von, that sacrifice is unthinkable—his little sister, May.

When the bunker’s leaders decree that May’s worsening illness makes her a liability, they sentence her to death in the name of “preserving resources.” But Von refuses to let the walls decide her fate. Bound by a promise to his dying mother, he risks everything to escape with May into a world overrun by the undead.

Now, hunted by both the living and the dead, Von must fight not just to keep May alive, but to give her the one thing she has only ever dreamed of: a chance to see the world beyond the bunker.

Prologue

Screams echo through the city streets of Downtown Denver as people flee for their lives. Chaos reigns as the dead hunt and devour the living. No one is safe. Those bitten are doomed to rise again, their ranks swelling the relentless horde that carries the virus forward.

Amidst the madness, a boy, fourteen years old, stands out. Standing roughly 5’5″, he wears a red shirt and black jeans. Without hesitation, he charges at a zombie, gripping his blood-drenched bat and swinging with all his might. Wap! The weapon cracks through the zombie’s skull, the sound sharp against the cacophony of screams. Blood sprays across the pavement as the corpse collapses.

The boy turns sharply, shouting, “May!”

A small girl, barely four or five years old, trembles nearby, crying, “Brother!”

“I’m scared. I want Mommy! Where’s Mommy?” Her sobs shake her tiny frame.

“I know,” he whispers, holding her close. “I promise you’ll see Mom again.” But inside, he is just as terrified, unsure of what to do next. The moans of the undead grow louder. More are coming.

Without hesitation, he lifts his sister into his arms and sprints toward an alleyway. He has no idea what lies ahead, only that he will do whatever it takes to keep her alive.
